VoiceBox

Male a cappella singing in and around Melbourne

Home

History

VoiceBox was formed in 1992 by a group of former members of the Victorian Boys Choir, who decided that just because their voice broke didn't mean that they could not continue singing.

From the start, VoiceBox was dedicated to singing a wide range of music with little or no accompaniment.  Today, the group prides itself on singing a cappella (unaccompanied) music in a wide range of styles.  This includes madrigals and religious music from the sixteenth century to arrangements of popular songs from the second half of the twentieth century.  In addition, the group does not restrict itself to songs in English; VoiceBox is also very much at home singing in German, Italian and Latin.  For details on the group's current repertoire, refer to the services page.

In the early years, there was a significant turnover of members.  The number of members in the group ranged between five and fifteen.  These days the group is composed of half a dozen members.  See our members page for profiles on current VoiceBox members.

VoiceBox has been fortunate to sing at many different venues and events over the years around Melbourne; from the Melbourne Concert Hall (now called Hamer Hall), the Boite Winter Festival, Melbourne Town Hall, the Paynesville Jazz Festival, and unusual places like Puffing Billy.  In addition to performing in places around Melbourne, VoiceBox has also gone on tours of Germany (2000) and New Zealand (2004).
